The word Karst is capitalised here, and we Karstians are a robust people—each is free to interpret that as they will. Between the northeast Adriatic and the hinterland lies the Karst, birthplace of karst‑science; many international terms, including doline (Velika and Mala dolina), originate in the Škocjan area.
The Škocjan Caves and their surroundings were inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1986, on the Ramsar List of Wetlands in 1999, and in 2004 the Škocjan Caves Park joined UNESCO’s MAB Biosphere‑Reserve network.
A classic example of contact karst—where impermeable flysch meets permeable limestone—Škocjan Caves are a global geo‑treasure whose preservation is a duty to future generations.
