The Idrija Municipal Museum was founded in 1953 to safeguard, research, and present the heritage of the Idrija Mercury Mine and the wider Idrija‑Cerkno cultural landscape.
For over seventy years it has been renowned for caring for the technical heritage of the world’s second‑largest mercury mine, the craft of Idrija lace, and the celebrated Franja Partisan Hospital. The museum oversees a network of sites, including Gewerkenegg Castle, the Cerkno Museum with its Laufarji carnival display, the Idrija Miner’s House, and a 2,900‑specimen Geological Collection.
