Opened in 1828 as the largest sugar refinery in the Habsburg south, Cukrarna burned down in 1858, later nurturing a generation of Slovene Modernist poets in its ruined shell. A bold 2018‑2021 renovation kept the brick skin and carved a 40‑metre steel nave inside, creating Ljubljana’s newest hub for contemporary art, sound, performance and debate. Overlooking the Ljubljanica River, the former factory now fuses industrial heritage with cutting‑edge creativity and event spaces that glow after dark.
