Celje Regional Museum presents part of its collections in a building known to visitors as Stara grofija. With its powerful, unified southern façade, it looks onto the Savinja embankment and dominates the southern view of the city. Stara grofija was built in the years after 1580 by the Counts Thurn – Valsassina—their ownership is evidenced by the family crest on the façade. In the years 1622–1640, arcade corridors were added and the courtyard was enclosed. The mansion remained in the possession of the Counts Thurn – Valsassina until 1869, when it was purchased by the municipality at an auction. In the adapted building, the municipal elementary school arranged its premises, and after 1914 the district court moved in. Only after World War II was Stara grofija given a more appropriate purpose.
