Deep in the Kočevje Forest a cluster of 26 timber huts sheltered Slovenia’s resistance leadership from April 1943 to December 1944. Never discovered by Axis forces, Base 20 is the only fully preserved clandestine command post of its kind in Europe and a landmark of Slovenian statehood. Up to 180 partisans—politicians, editors, radio operators—worked here, shaping decisions that led to the Kočevje Assembly and the founding of SNOS. A permanent exhibit in Hut 16 immerses visitors in maps, diaries and a 360‑degree sense of life lived in whispers and resolve.
