The Archaeological Park Divje Babe, set in the rolling Idrija‑Cerklje Hills, is one of the world’s most important Paleolithic sites. Tucked into a steep, rocky slope descending from the Šebrelje Plateau into the Idrijca River valley, a cave conceals the remains of over 60 animal species (dominated by the cave bear), stone and bone tools, and Ice Age hearths.
Divje Babe I is a cave site spanning the Middle (moustérien) and early Upper Paleolithic (aurignacien). Its multiple stratigraphic layers have been dated by various radiometric methods, ranging from approximately 35,000 to 116,000 years ago. The youngest excavated layers date to the era of the last Neanderthals and the first anatomically modern humans.
