Perched on a high ridge between Ljubljana Marsh and the Kočevje forests, Turjak was founded by the Auerspergs in the 11th century. Besieged by peasants in 1515, attacked by Ottomans and shaken by the 1895 earthquake, the castle still guards St George’s chapel with late-Gothic vault, a Baroque knights’ hall and a dungeon. Guided tours tell of Count Ahacel and a winged dragon, while the terrace overlooks the rolling hills of Lower Carniola.
